Web Development Sample:
Seeking a New Site
Client: Internet System for Education and Employment
Knowledge (ISEEK) at www.iseek.org.
Solution: Redesigned web site.
Objective: ISEEK determined that difficult
navigation and inconsistent presentation of content were obstacles to
users and thus to the success of its public web site. They wanted a site
that would help to promote higher education, training, and career exploration,
and facilitate the search for employment in Minnesota.
Fredrickson's goals in working with ISEEK were to:
Development tools: Macromedia® Dreamweaver®,
Cascading Style Sheets.
Highlights: We conducted a comprehensive audience
analysis to determine the most common scenarios for using the site. These
scenarios formed the basis for a new user-centered navigation structure.
An expandable/collapsible navigation panel and color-coded sections were
developed to quickly guide users through these common scenarios. Hyperlinks
within page content allow users to follow alternate threads outside the
main navigation structure.
ISEEK is accessible to the vision-impaired and is available
in Hmong, Spanish, and Somali. We wrote the content with ease of translation
in mind and designed the navigation to be equally usable as a text-only
display.
