Objective: BIO-key International needed online
help for WEB-key, a biometric finger-reading security application for
the Web. Because WEB-key was a new technology, the online help needed
to educate users about biometrics as well as help them use the application.
Fredrickson met the challenge by developing a highly visual
Help system that teaches users about finger-reading technology, calms
their fears about Web security, and provides step-by-step application
instructions.
Development tools: Macromedia® Dreamweaver®
and Adobe® PhotoShop®.
Highlights: Although the Help is context-sensitive
and primarily task-based, users can quickly navigate to conceptual overviews
or troubleshooting information once the Help interface is displayed.
We used lists, tables, and call-outs to accommodate the
way Web users commonly read—by scanning pages for the information
they seek.
