Intersect Meeting:  August 2010

Accessibility in Technology in the State of Minnesota

For the past year, the Technology Accessibility Standards Implementation project has been underway. Accessibility standards are in the process of being adopted into the State architecture and cross-agency workgroups led by the Office of Enterprise Technology and the Department of Administration. Staff members in both of these areas have been working on tools and training needed for implementation. This session will provide an update on what we have accomplished and what’s yet to come.

The discussion will include:

  • An overview of the accessibility statute, the standards process, and the implementation project.
  • Definitions: what is accessibility? How does it differ from accommodation?
  • Information about the standards, and what we are doing to ensure a successful implementation.

About our presenter:
Rena Rogers has been at the Office of Enterprise Technology for 12 years, working in both Training and Development and Project Management. Her current assignment is Project Manager for the Technology Accessibility Standards and Implementation Project. Rena is a certified PMP and holds advanced degrees in both computer science and education.

This session is Part One of a two-part series on accessibility. Part Two, at our November 9 Intersect meeting, will address the more tactical elements around implementing accessibility.

Tanya Belanger, a member of Rena’s team, will will present more granular how-to information regarding the best use of Word documents, pdfs, etc. online. Watch for more information about this session via email in mid-October.

About Intersect: Where public sector communications and technology professionals meet.
The Intersect group provides a forum where communications and web professionals from the public sector can discuss topics pertinent to their roles and projects. With more and more interaction taking place on the web, it is essential that communications, training, and web technology professionals work together closely and understand more about each other’s roles, processes, and challenges. Yet organizational structures — often created in the pre-web era — sometimes prevent this from happening as easily as it should.

We formed Intersect in 2007 to help public-sector peers in IT and communications overcome challenges, discuss common issues, and learn from each other. The Intersect group meets quarterly. Join us!

Intersect membership requirements
Membership in Intersect is by invitation only. To keep the focus of the group on the needs of the professionals it serves, only those who are currently directly employed by a recognized public-sector entity, in an IT or communications role, are eligible for membership. Consultants, vendors, sales associates, and contractors are not eligible for membership in Intersect.

Would you like to join Intersect? Send us an email for more information.

Intersect members will receive the meeting location and directions in an email invitation. Meeting locations and other information is also available in the discussion board of the Intersect Group on LinkedIn.
